Outside ("the app") is a personal Android app built by GlitchGreg that detects whether you are indoors or outdoors using on-device sensors. This policy explains what data is collected, how it is used, and your rights.

1. Data Collected On-Device

The app reads the following sensor data locally to determine indoor/outdoor state. This data is processed entirely on your device and is never sent to any server operated by the developer:

Location (GPS / fine & background) — used to obtain GNSS satellite counts and solar elevation. Never uploaded.
Ambient light sensor — used to distinguish indoor vs. outdoor lighting conditions.
Barometric pressure — used as a secondary outdoor signal.
Magnetometer — used to detect indoor interference patterns.
Wi-Fi scan results — RSSI values of nearby access points, used as an indoor proximity signal. No network content is accessed.
Physical activity — activity recognition (walking, running, cycling, etc.) used to weight the outdoor score.

2. Data Stored Locally

The app stores the following data in a local database on your device only:

Outdoor session records (start/end times, verdict, source)
Daily goal settings
Optional ground-truth labels (debug use only)

This data never leaves your device unless you use the built-in Export feature, in which case you choose where the file is saved.

3. Third-Party Services

The app uses the following Google / Firebase services, which may collect data per their own privacy policies:

Firebase Analytics — automatically collects anonymised usage events (app opens, session length, device model, OS version). No personally identifiable information is collected. Firebase Privacy Policy →

4. Permissions

The app requests the following Android permissions, each used solely for detection:

ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION — GPS-based outdoor detection
ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION — continuous detection while the screen is off
ACCESS_WIFI_STATE / NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES — Wi-Fi signal reading
ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION — step/motion context for fusion
FOREGROUND_SERVICE / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_LOCATION — required to run the detection loop in the background
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED — restarts detection after device reboot
REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS — keeps detection reliable; you may decline

5. Data Sharing

The developer does not sell, trade, or share your personal data with third parties. The only data that leaves the device is the anonymised analytics and crash reports described in Section 3.

6. Data Retention

All local session data is retained until you delete it via the app or uninstall the app. Analytics and crash data is retained by Google per their standard retention policies.

7. Children's Privacy

Outside is not directed at children under 13. The app does not knowingly collect information from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated occasionally. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
